ORLANDO, Fla. – Dec. 1, 2009 – With Adopt A Senior Pet Month coming to end but more senior pets than ever in need of loving homes, Orange County Animal Services today extended its “Seniors for Seniors” promotion through Dec. 31. The promotion provides free adoptions for citizens ages 55 and up who adopt shelter pets ages 8 and up.
The promotion took an especially poignant turn recently when 12 animals—five of which are senior cats—arrived at Animal Services following a neglect investigation.“With so many senior pets coming to our shelter in the past few weeks, including those in the neglect case, we felt compelled to give them the happy ending they deserve,” said Katie Lockett, Division Manager. “We hope by extending the free adoptions we will be able to successfully place them all in loving homes.”

The shelter currently has more than 15 senior pets. The animals recently surrendered during the neglect investigation have an especially interesting history.
These cats belonged to a law enforcement officer who was shot in the line of duty in Orange County many years ago and passed away earlier this year,” said Lockett. “They have certainly experienced more than their share of trauma in the past few months, and we’d love to see it all end on a happy note for them and for all of the senior pets at our shelter.”
